RQYS Canaipa

Tucked on the north-east tip of Russell Island, RQYS Canaipa is the Royal Queensland Yacht Squadron’s “down-the-bay” retreat — a private sanctuary that many Manly-based sailors treat as a true all-weather bolthole. With good shelter in a wide range of breezes, a tender pontoon, and club facilities ashore for full members, it is one of the most practical overnight destinations in southern Moreton Bay when the forecast turns changeable.
How to get there
Heading out from the leads at Manly Boat Harbour, sail south into the southern bay. A common route is past Green and King Islands, then south-east toward Peel Island before continuing down through the marked channels of the southern islands toward Russell Island and Canaipa Passage. Keep a close eye on MSQ Beacon to Beacon charts — sandbanks and shallow patches are part of the scenery here, and ferry traffic around Macleay and the nearby passages can be busy.
Canaipa Passage itself (the link along the western side of North Stradbroke toward the Gold Coast waterways) is tide-sensitive and has a history of silting. Deep-draft yachts should time any transit for a rising tide and use current soundings rather than relying on memory. Brisbane tide predictions are the usual reference for this part of the bay.
Allow a few hours from Manly in typical Yachtshare conditions; the run is longer than Peel or Coochie and rewards an early start. Exact time depends on boat speed, tide and route.
Anchorage Overview
Best winds: All-weather shelter in the near vicinity (RQYS describes it as an all-weather anchorage)
Depth: Typically a few metres in the approaches — sound carefully and allow for tide
Bottom: Mud / sand (confirm on approach)
Getting into the anchorage
RQYS Canaipa is a private facility. Shore access, the tender pontoon, pool, barbecues and amenities are for RQYS full members (not social members); there is no public access to the grounds. If you plan to go ashore, contact the on-site caretaker ahead of time and follow current Squadron rules.
Anchor in the sheltered water nearby rather than blocking the pontoon or fairway. Give swinging room to other members’ boats, watch the tide, and keep clear of any marked shallows off the tip of Russell Island. In strong conditions, double-check your holding before settling in for the night.
What to do there
Ashore (members), the property covers about a hectare with showers, toilets, laundry, a swimming pool, covered barbecues, picnic lawns and room to stretch the legs after the sail down. It is particularly handy for crews who want a comfortable overnight without needing a marina berth.
Afloat, the surrounding channels and islands make good day-sailing and dinghy exploring when the breeze and tide line up. Sunset over the southern bay is often the highlight. Always check Moreton Bay Marine Park zoning before fishing or crabbing nearby.
RQYS Canaipa is ideal for an overnight or a quiet weekend when you want reliable shelter and a soft landing. It’s a favourite with Yachtshare owners who value a true down-the-bay stop rather than another crowded beach anchorage.
